At first, I wanted to take note of which poems I liked so I could include them in this review -- I started off with how I teared and something wrenched within me when I finished Mother Love, then I laughed and wanted to frame (and have illustrated!) Diet No More, and how much I loved the way the words of Life's Ride were laid out (stylistics is what it was called when I studied it in school), then I realized, I was loving every single poem in this collection and it wouldn't do a customer any good for me to list them all down when you can just get the book, right?

So let me begin again and say how it felt to read these poems. The poet is a cancer survivor. She writes about her battle with it, how it steals her identity till it seems all that is left is the sickness, how she proclaims bald is not beautiful and she misses her old hair, but also how there is so much hope inside her and in the end, victory. I particularly loved Victorious: A Sonnet because of its tenderness, pain, and love. I read this book from start to finish, savoring each word, each line, each poem. I sat in silence while I read, my toddler asleep next to me, and I felt peace and hope wash over me. Life is usually noisy and stressful, but spending time with these beautiful poems made me stop, take a breath (and a break), and revel in the stillness and joy. Perfect Christmas (and of course year-round) reading!

Remember those days when you were in school and had to read Macbeth by the bard, William Shakespeare; you must be able to remember, at least in part, this famous soliloquy

There would have been a time for such a word.
Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day

If you can, then you can totally relate to what Katy Huth Jones is saying within the poetry she’s included in this book. Life is too brief to keep worrying to what has been, because there’s nothing we can do about changing what has already happened. And we can’t worry about the future either. Instead, we must look forward to each day has it comes and live it to its fullest.

It’s nice looking back to the decisions we’ve made and wonder what would have been if I had only done this instead of that, I know because I’ve done it myself; and the chances are you’ve done it as well.

Furthermore, as I’ve already mentioned; try as we might love to do, we can’t do anything about the future even it might be only an hour, or better yet, the next minute; because some crazed idiot might decide to drive by and shoot you as you walk down the road. And to go even further, you can’t tell me what you’re thinking about RIGHT NOW because that now has already passed.

Instead you must do what the quote the author uses on the very first page of her book

"Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero." From Horace's Odes

And seize each day, each minute and each second as they come.

For telling the truth about what we need to do to live life to its fullest, I’m happy to give Ms. Hunt and her book, 5 STARS.

Katy has put together some great work we can all enjoy - poetry collected over years of joyful, challenging, scary, jubilant, frightening times...each page has a different message that will speak to your heart.
This book of poems is very poignant.

I like the rhyme found in most of the poems and the emotion made me both laugh and cry. Many poems leave me wondering what the author is trying to say but not these. I connected with and loved each poem in the collection with the title poem "Carpe Diem" probably being my favorite.
Wow. I highly recommend these beautiful, poignant poems. Written by a cancer survivor, they offer a realistic look at the grim reality of a life-changing disease, yet at the same time they are full of hope and an appreciation of the beauty that can't be taken away from those who choose to see it in the world. This book would make a great, encouraging gift for someone dealing with cancer or other serious health struggles.
I only read poetry collections once in the very bluest of moons, but I decided to take a quick break with Carpe Diem by Katy Huth Jones.

I connected most with her reflections on her experiences with illness, especially where "true love" comes in. Can't say I didn't tear up a couple times while reading, and I wasn't expecting that at all.

Anyone who can appreciate inspirational poetry can find something to appreciate in this collection. Light and sweet here, haunting and defiant there, with moments that are profound and uplifting.
