I rated this 3 stars because I felt the story lost some head way toward the end. I would have given it 4 to 5 stars with out it beating the sex angle to death. merit of the story, however I felt the the sex angle was over done. I believe the Vicky story has a lot of interesting potential that is generally justified in this first installment. This story takes Place just after Kirs Longnife's return from meeting the Big Nasty, and Vicky's maturing into something more substantial experience than what she was raised for. It makes for a good read and I do look forward to the sequel - enjoy.

Vicky Peterwald Target A Vicky Peterwald Novel Mike Shepherd Books Reviews
Good Gallivant around Space chasing, kanoodling, being chased and generally trying not to be killed by any number of villans.
First, I would like to say that I've read the Kris Longknife series and those written in the storyline beforehand. I really like those, so I had high hopes for this one, even knowing Vicky's character beforehand. That's probably why I am so disappointed.
Second, I would like to state that the storyline seems to be headed in an interesting arc. If I choose to read the subsequently published books in this series, I see that there are possibly great things ahead for Vicky as she works to save the empire.
Finally, I would like to discuss what is putting me on the fence about pursuing this series any further. This book had more editing problems than I'm used to in Mr. Shepherd's books. You can't expect the books to be perfect because something always gets missed, but it gave me pause.
Next, it's not a bad thing that Vicky is more sexual than Kris Longknife; however, Vicky is at the opposite extreme. If she's not having sex with whatever body (male or female) is handy, she's thinking about it. So, it's not the sex, it's the quantity of the book wasted on the topic. Sex has become commonly used as filler in literature, it's often used to stretch out the page length without the author having to put in the effort of writing an interesting storyline. It's kinda boring to read. So, I inevitably flip the page(s) until the real story resumes. (Please, Mr. Shepherd, avoid the temptation to substitute sweaty bodies for substance - more than one of my favorite series has been ruined that way.)
Unlike the other books, which usually have at least two awesome storylines, this has sex and attempted assassinations at the palace. There are stops along the way, which would have provided excellent opportunities for more detailed adventures, but they were given short shrift. (See what I mean? More sex = less plot.)

After they get the tank repaired, you can flip to the final few pages. There's ABSOLUTELY nothing of note between there and their destination.
The main character wasn't likeable. Couldn't root for her. She thinks of no one but herself. People have no visible reason to be liking her other than her breasts. The verbal foreplay would go on for pages. The book was terrible. Do not do this to Kris Longknife. Oh, and if I never hear or read the phrases "Irish sigh" and "those damn Longknifes" again, it will be too soon.
I very much enjoy the Longknife series and I thought I would enjoy this side series like what has happened with the Honour Harrington series. Unfortunately I just didn't find this as engaging. While some of the story and characters were interesting,It felt like it was written for teenagers with lots of titalating sex and shallow characters.
I am one who thinks that lots of graphic sex has no place in space opera/military sci-fi. And, I find this funny, Mike Shepherd seems fascinated by women's underwear. Much description of this in "Vicky" and also in his Kris Longknife books. Sometimes I wonder if authors write about sex and female nether garments as a way of "pleasuring" themselves, rather than to please their readers.
Yes, lots to complain about, but the basic story is good enough for me to get the sequel, unless it's priced outrageously.
A premise with promise, destroyed in the execution. Vicky Peter Walt is so disappointing after such a strong character as Kris Longknife. Cheap sexploitation. 50 shades of gray, male adolescent version. Lacing fiction with casual physical intimacy is nothing noteworthy but the blatant suggestion that all a woman needs to cope with loss and rape is the right man and a good shag is offensive. It's also a cheat, adding bulk without substance. So disappointing.
I enjoyed reading it in conjunction with the Kris Longknife series. But Mike, let's have less sex and more story. It seemed like you spent more time talking about her bedtime adventures than on the real story of her survival. I liked the Kris Longknife series because it about an intelligent and resourceful commander, not somebody who just jumps from bed to bed, and leaves a trail of ex-lovers behind in the dust. Having a caring and loyal partner is one thing, but really, I kept thinking, lady, get a life... I will continue to read this spin off, but I'm in danger of losing interest here. A little sex is OK, but...
